April 2018 Balun Design for a Wide Bandwidth 200W PA

Originally presented at the European Microwave PA Forum this webinar presents the application and design of a printed Balun suitable for L-band (1350-1850 MHz) push-pull power amplifiers. The design begins with an idealized circuit simulation in Microwave Office using closed-form transmission line models followed by a more rigorous 2.5D planar EM simulation conducted using AXIEM. Measured results and techniques for analyzing the performance of components with non 50 ohm terminations are discussed.

Balanced amplifier approaches are popular in RF applications due to a number of implicit advantages of the topology. Using the approach in the microwave region has been challenging, mainly due to the difficulty in creating an anti-phase power splitter/combiner or Balun. This webinar will demonstrate the use of AXIEM EM simulation tools to create a 50% bandwidth planar Balun and harmonic balance simulation of a 200W GaN transistor to design a High Power Push-Pull Amplifier.

Wolfspeed/PoweRFul Microwave Article in July MPD Issue

In this month's issue of Microwave Product Digest a demonstration board covering 50-1000MHz 100W designed by Dr. Dominic FitzPatrick of PoweRFul Microwave is described in detail. Article 
The article covers the design and performance of the main amplifier based on the CGHV40100F 50V GaN HEMT, the driver using a plastic packaged CGHV27015S 15W GaN HEMT, and the bias control circuit including gate and drain sequencing, over current protection and thermal shutdown for safe operation.

European Microwave 2016

Dominic FitzPatrick of PoweRFul Microwave will be chairing the RF & Microwave Society Special Session at the European Microwave Conference In London on Tuesday 4th of October. The session will include 5 of the best papers from recent Society meetings and is intended to introduce the Society to a wider audience.

On Wednesday the 5th of October Dominic will be giving a presentation at the NI AWR PA Forum, PA Forum Details and afterwards chairing a panel session with the other presenters. This is always a lively and informative event, highly recommended to those involved in amplifier design.

PoweRFul Microwave will be presenting another webinar with Microwave Journal and sponsored by Cree and NI (formerly AWR) on the 17th of September 2014. The webinar is titled:
“Practical Simulation and Design of Broadband GaN RF Power Amplifiers – How Close are we to Right First Time Now?
The presentation will demonstrate the design of a 100-1000MHz 100W GaN HEMT Power Amplifier using the non-linear models from Cree and the software package Microwave Office. Comparisons between the simulated and measured results will be made.

PoweRFul Microwave will be presenting a webinar, "Simulating Dynamic Load Modulated Amplifiers - an Alternative Solution to Maintaining Efficiency over a Power Range" on the 18th of June.

This presentation will introduce the concept of Dynamic Load Modulation and demonstrate how amplifiers can be designed using this approach. The ability of the modern CAD tools to model nonlinear components, such as varactor diodes, using discrete components and parameterised variables will be covered. This capability, coupled with the nonlinear models of GaN FET devices, gives the designer access to a fully dynamic simulation of the amplifier, opening up numerous other possibilities for performance improvement.

AWR release White Paper on Balun Design

Based on work by PoweRFul Microwave's Dominic FitzPatrick, this paper describes how the Axiem E-M simulation engine within the Microwave Office design suite can be used to design planar baluns. These structures are particularly useful in high power, high efficiency Power Amplifiers and have traditionally been manufactured using coaxial cables. Planar baluns are more repeatable, lower cost and easier to assemble and so a particularly attractive for volume manufacture.
